Divorce is certainly stressful. The goal for mediation is twofold: reduce the stress of this difficult time and make an action plan that is agreeable for both parties.

Family therapy is often short-term and focuses on specific goals to improve family dynamics. Generally, a family will explore individual needs and wants as well as familial patterns of conflict and communication. While not every person in the family needs to participate in family therapy, everyone may benefit in improving communication skills, in learning coping skills for challenging situations, offering insight and understanding, identifying problem areas, developing strategies for handling conflict and improving and strengthening relationships.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a therapy that helps people recover from trauma and PTSD. It is effective for anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain and other life situations that create distress.  Ongoing research over the years continues to demonstrate successful outcomes.

Clinicians need to undergo rigorous training in order to provide EMDR.  Progressions of training include Level 1 and Level 2, at which time a therapist may provide EMDR. The next level is Certified status followed by Consultant status. EMDR Consultants may supervise therapists that want further training in EMDR.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications.
